Robert J. McCarthy, Jr.
Robert J. McCarthy, Jr., wrote for The Buffalo News for 41 years, the last 31 as political reporter. He began his career at the Olean Times Herald. He’s covered a wide array of elections and candidates in national, state, and local races including 14 national conventions. In addition to his reporting, McCarthy wrote a Sunday column, covered the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, and sat as a panelist for political debates.
Bob McCarthy received a 2006 New York State Publishers Association first place award with colleague Michael Beebe for stories on irregularities in the State Liquor Authority that led to the chairman’s resignation and major reforms of the agency. A 2002 series of articles co-authored with Beebe on how State Supreme Court candidates are chosen was nominated by The News for a Pulitzer Prize.
A lifetime New Yorker, Bob McCarthy was born in Scotia in Schenectady County and proudly learned the journalism craft at Saint Bonaventure University.
